The pair’s longstanding rivalry was further ignited as Gordon Ramsay challenged the stand-up comedian to replicate his Asian inspired dish.
Uncle Roger’s feud with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay continues to heat up. Ramsay sent a challenge to Roger over on the comedian’s YouTube channel, mrnigelng, asking if he can “actually cook”. The task given was to follow an Asian influenced recipe from the reality TV legend’s new cookbook, Uncharted.
The character, created by stand-up comedian Nigel Ng Kin-ju, opens with immediate criticism of the cookbook Ramsay gifted him. The book ties into Ramsay’s National Geographic television series of the same title, where he explores various places and the food they offer.
Uncle Roger sees the book as leaning too heavily into the nature side of things, slamming the cover as it “looks like some random middle-aged guy going travelling”.
The two’s food techniques clash. While Ramsay lists all the measurements in his cookbook, Uncle Roger tells the audience to focus more on feeling and to use international ingredients the “right way” not the “white way”, highlighting Roger’s focus on attacking chefs who westernise Asian food.
Their rivalry goes further when Roger uses the divisive ingredient MSG in his version of Ramsay’s recipe, with the professional chef running to the comments to complain.
The fried rice review that sparked this culinary conflict
“Again”? It’s not the first time chef Gordon Ramsay and comedian Uncle Roger have gone head to head.
The first collision happened when Ng’s character reviewed Ramsay’s attempt at egg fried rice. This wasn’t his first time viewing a Western chef’s attempt at this dish—he first found viral fame through reacting to the BBC’s version of the same food.
The comedian is surprisingly impressed by Ramsay’s attempt, but it’s not all kindness. While praising his knowledge, Uncle Roger adds, “maybe you need better skincare. You got all the good cooking skill, maybe you need some moisturiser.”
Uncle Roger and Gordon Ramsay roast Jamie Oliver
Uncle Roger concludes his dig towards Ramsay with a hit intended for Jamie Oliver. Uncle Roger and Gordon Ramsay have more in common than some may think, with neither being fond of the health-focused British chef.
Uncle Roger has multiple videos expressing he “HATES” many of Oliver’s recipes, including his version of egg fried rice. In one hilarious skit, Roger is restrained and told he has to eat the British chef’s Thai red curry.
Earlier in 2022, the comedian captioned a Tik Tok of him and Ramsay meeting in person to film an episode of Hell’s Kitchen, claiming “we bitched about Jamie Oliver for 15 minutes”.
Ramsay’s second youngest child, Tilly Ramsay, posted a Tik Tok contributing to a decades long feud between the culinary icons. In the video, Ramsay delivers the shocking claim of Oliver stealing other’s recipes.
Jamie Oliver was silent at Ramsay’s explosive allegation, and has not given a reaction towards any of Uncle Roger’s videos either.
The unpredictable alliance that combines comedy and culinary
In this first collaboration, Uncle Roger dubs Gordon Ramsay “Uncle Gordon” out of extreme respect for his cooking. However, the two have known to bicker when they interact.
Ramsay brags that he’s visited Malaysia more than Roger, despite Roger spending much of his childhood in the country. Uncle Roger claps back, letting the Kitchen Nightmare star know that he’s using the wrong noodles for his dish.
In spite of this tension, does Roger still hold Ramsay in high esteem? The often foul-mouthed Michelin star chef extends plenty of respect towards the YouTuber, asking for his help when Ramsay takes a page out of his book, slamming unconventional cooking creations online.
Who emerged the cuisine confrontation victorious?
Uncle Roger follows the recipe, adding some tips and tricks from Asian cooking throughout. At the end of the video, he’s left with perfectly crunchy fish. It’s a strong contrast to the fresh cod Ramsay recently tweeted, suggesting Uncle Roger did his own thing rather than following along with Gordon Ramsay’s recipe.
Uncle Roger graciously thanked Ramsay for the cookbook, saying it “looks good”.
Ramsay has not yet responded. His recent tweet invited more to challenge him, joining the battle in the official Hell’s Kitchen Discord channel.
