Joe Rogan Experience frequenter Graham Hancock discusses conspiracies surrounding the Amazon rainforest with the podcast host.
Episode #1284 is one of Graham Hancock’s many guest spots, and him and Rogan quickly delve into Hancock’s typical world of conspiracy.
Joe Rogan brings up research that made waves near the episode’s 2019 release, exploring early human impact on the Amazon rainforest. He specifies the discovery of tunnels and irrigation that can only be man-made.
Graham Hancock gives listeners a sneak peek into his book America Before: The Key to Earth’s Lost Civilisation. He refers to the Amazon as a “colossal mystery”.
Hancock shares that of the Amazon’s 7,000,000km2 territory, almost 80% is unstudied. The mysterious area is still covered in dense rainforest. He succeeds at putting this space into perspective, revealing that the underexplored area is the same size as the subcontinent of India.
Graham Hancock slams the uneducated assumption that there’s no point in studying the Amazon, as humans should not have been able to thrive there.
Graham Hancock’s Unbelievable Tale is Centuries in the Making
The writer explains why the theory has shifted, stating it’s due to the rainforest being cut away for agriculture.
He suggests that there were massive cities underneath the rainforest. Hancock brings up the tale of Francisco de Orellana, a Spanish explorer who was the first European to venture into the Amazon. He reported seeing “hoards of gold and cinnamon” in the area.
While later visitors accused Orellana of lying, his stories are becoming more credible as we see more of the Amazon. Hancock explains the disruption of these cities as due to the Spanish bringing smallpox into the community.
According to Hancock, the cities of this era are equally as populated as London was at the time. He claims that there was a population of twenty million across the entire Amazon.
Joe Rogan Shocked at Ancient Civilisation’s Skills
Anticipating disbelief, he launches into an explanation on how they fed themselves. It seems like an impossible task, given the poor fertility of rainforest soil.
Furthering the unbelievable tale of these hidden cities, Graham Hancock shares that the Amazonians invented their own soil to compensate for the poor quality of the surrounding land.
The ancient society added biochar (a charcoal-like substance) into the soil, dubbed both Terra Preta and Amazonian dark soil. This mix rapidly improved the population’s yield.
The question looms on how this special soil was created, and it’s a question that’s been on scientist’s minds for centuries. The microbes—incredibly tiny organisms—of Terra Preta are completely different to those of surrounding soils.
Hancock tosses the vision of the Amazon as a “pristine rainforest” away, instead seeing it as an area that was effectively manipulated by an ancient civilisation.
Graham Hancock’s Mystery Thickens
He brings up the most famous henge, Stonehenge, before revealing that many have been found in the Amazon using non-invasive imaging technology to see under the rainforest.
Graham Hancock believes the multitude of henges is only the start of this story, and the researchers agree. Investigations need to proceed further for the answer on how old these ancient structures are.
He draws a few conclusions. The henges are perfectly aligned with north and south, suggesting there were astronomers involved in their creation. The complex geometry leads Hancock to believe people with those skills were also at work, and the massive scale indicates the construction of this site was a highly organised project.
Were the Constructions Religious?
Hancock is open about researchers drawing a blank on the purpose of these henges. For his final note, he links the environmental site to a system of global ideas about the afterlife and death.
