What Is Kill Tony?
Kill Tony is a live podcast ran out of Joe Rogan’s Mothership venue in Texas where comedians sign their names on small pieces of paper and place them in a bucket. Names are drawn throughout the show where the comedians are allowed to come on stage to perform – but there are some catches! Each comedian has 1 minute to complete their set (which is harder than you think).
The time limit of 1 minute where a comedian needs to land a joke where an audience PLUS a panel of famous comedians are waiting to be entertained is a lot of pressure. The pressure is too much for some comedians where a minute feels like a life time and they ‘bomb’ and crickets can be heard over their terrible sets. Others go on the show to try a set for their first time which can also go very badly.
The second portion of the guest being on stage is the interview. This can ruin a great set, some people are better at comedy than an interview and vice versa. Sometimes Tony simply kicks people off stage for ‘trying to be funny‘ instead of simply answering questions. Interviews are best when the (hopeful) comedian answers truthfully about their lives rather than continuing trying to perform.
Jared Nathan “Globally Challenged” Kill Tony Comedian
The podcast is known for its boundary-less humour where comedians are encouraged to say raunchy and outrageous jokes for laughs and are encouraged from the panel and audience. “Golden Ticket Winner” Jared Nathan who is “globally challenged” gets made fun of his disabilities with direct name calling insults or jokes about Jared’s stutter. One joke Tony has used on more than one occasion is playing “Bad to the Bone” by George Thorogood where he stutters over the letter “B” to joke about the stutter.
Jared laughs along with these jokes and even roasts Tony on some occasions. Each guest on the podcast is subject to having their biggest insecurities put in the spot light which is a specialty for regular guest David Lucas known for his ability to roast Tony, the audience and any panel guests brave enough to get involved. It is normal on this podcast to insult, joke and laugh along with everyone’s insecurities as long as you can laugh along with your own.
Tony’s Cancellation
In episode “KILL TONY #612 – DOUG STANHOPE” tony mentions “this is the two-year anniversary of my cancellation everybody” referencing a clip that was released by fellow comedian Peng Dang where Tony was on stage and said what people have called “racial slurs”.
As you may already know, Tony has risen to more success since this clip was released and his career continues to thrive with both his comedy specials and live show. In interviews since, Tony has referred to the people who posted the clips as ‘That’s The Scum Of The Earth To Me‘.
Culture has taken many shifts in the last 10 years when it comes to subjects we ‘can joke about’ and many test the limits constantly. The migration of comedians moving from ‘blue’ cities previously known for their comedy and arts scenes is a commonly known theme occurring within American culture at the moment. This shift if an indication that ‘cancellation’ and topics comedians are ‘allowed’ to talk about changing and comedians are physically moving away from the areas that promote this culture.
Does Doug Stanhope Say The N Word?
During the set of Kam Patterson, Tony Hinchcliffe, Doug Stanhope and the audience is laughing hysterically at his one-minute set. Kam’s set revolved around the (hopefully figurative) roaches in his apartment that he tactically kills during dates. It is hilarious and you should check it out beginning at 1 hour and 9 minutes of episode #612.
At this stage Doug had quite a few drinks while making funny comments to every comedian on stage and seemed to be getting carried away. At the end of the one minute set of Kam Patterson, Doug and Kam shared a hand shake in good spirit. Kam begins to joke about his work saying he worked at a golf club, after about 20 seconds of joking about his job, the conversation goes as follows:
Kam: “I like you though, you a good dude” (to Doug Stanhope)
Tony begins quoting Kam’s remarks about his job: “When you say a golf cart ‘N-word'”…
Doug Stanhope interjects which is cut from the audio with a “bleep” noise but the reaction from both the band and Kam indicates the language used was offensive. Due to the context of the conversation the n-word may have been thrown around, coupled with the fact that swearing happens regularly on the show, it would have to be very offensive language to cut the audio. See for yourself at this time stamp.
Here is a screenshot at the time Kam begins saying “WOAH WOAH WOAH”. The band members have scrunched up faces but Doug Stanhope doesn’t seem to understand the impact of the statements he may have made.
After the audio is cut and Kam starts confronting Doug Stanhope about his comments, Tony Hinchcliffe says “He didn’t say ‘it’, it was a bleep” and continues the interview with Kam. Doug awkwardly tries to bring up his comments by saying “I think you duped me, you acted like that was some …. when he said ‘golf cart n-word’ I thought that’s a thing I should know from the hip hop you listen too…”. Tony plays this off as another joke and continues moving on.
Doug was caught up in the moment where he may have crossed a line with what he thought were jokes, which is what comedians do regularly. Although it’s normal for comedians to make offensive jokes that don’t land, it seems unusual Doug may have chosen the N word. Watch the podcast below and judge for yourself. Comment if you think there’s another explanation for the bleep!
